About the department
The Department of Otolaryngology at the Martha-Maria Hospital Munich offers comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of ENT diseases. The department provides both conservative therapy and surgical treatment using advanced endoscopic, microscopic and plastic reconstructive surgeries. Should surgical treatment be required, the preference is always given to the most sparing techniques that guarantee minimal pain and rapid postoperative recovery. The range of such surgical interventions includes tonsil removal, image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery, CO2 laser resections of head and neck tumors, middle ear microsurgery to improve hearing, etc. In addition, the department offers the services of the Cochlear Implant Center, whose specialists have rich experience in this field and restore hearing in patients with severe forms of hearing loss.
The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Markus Suckfüll. Previously, the professor held the position of Senior Physician and Deputy Head of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University Hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In addition, Dr. Suckfüll is an active scientist and author of numerous publications, and regularly speaks at the national and international medical congresses.
The department is famous for excellent treatment of patients with impaired hearing and deafness using cochlear implantation. Prior to this therapeutic procedure, the patient undergoes comprehensive diagnostics, ranging from subjective and objective auditory tests and balance testing to imaging diagnostics (CT, MRI, etc.). The next step is the prescription of cochlear implantation and development of an individual postoperative recovery plan. The surgery itself takes about 90 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia. The intervention is performed by highly qualified surgeons, so the risk of complications is almost zero. An important stage of the operation is the accurate placement of the electrode holder in the cochlea, since this is the key to successful outcome of the procedure. The diagnostics of the state of the auditory nerve and functional testing of the implant are also performed directly during the operation. As a rule, the patient is discharged from the hospital 2-3 days after the operation. After about five weeks, the implant is adapted to the characteristics of the patient's auditory analyzer and its functional state is checked.
The department's team of doctors also admits patients with various diseases of the nasal cavity. The specialists often perform surgical interventions to remove nasal polyps, septoplasty to repair a nasal septum deviation, septorhinoplasty, which combines straightening of the nasal septum and nose reshaping, radiofrequency turbinoplasty, sinusitis surgery and other interventions.
The competence of the department's otolaryngologists also includes operations on the larynx and salivary glands. As a rule, the surgeons of the medical facility use endoscopic and microsurgical techniques, so postoperative recovery occurs as soon as possible.
The department's range of therapeutic services includes:
- Ear surgery
