How program is carried out

During the first visit, the physician will conduct a clinical examination and neurological examination, and go through the results of the available diagnostic tests. After that, you will undergo the necessary additional examination, such as the laboratory blood and urine tests, MRI or CT scan. Based on the results of an additional examination, the physician will clarify the localization of foci of pathological electrical activity in the brain. After that, the preparation according to the preoperative standard will begin.

The first stage of treatment is the implantation of stimulating electrodes into the brain. The operation is performed under local anesthesia, through a small opening in the skull. You will be awake and communicating with your surgeon, so that he will be able to assess the correctness of the brain electrodes placement.

The second stage of treatment is the implantation of a neurostimulator, which will generate electrical impulses that regulate the work of the brain. Depending on the anatomical peculiarities, the surgeon will place the neurostimulator under the collarbone or in the abdomen and attach the brain electrodes to it. Typically, this operation is performed under general anesthesia.

After the completion of the operation, you will stay in the intensive care unit, under the round-the-clock supervision of physicians and nurses. When the condition becomes stable, you will be transferred to a regular ward.

Your physician will evaluate the results of the postoperative MRI and program the neurostimulator according to your individual needs. You will be able to turn the device on and off yourself. After setting up the neurostimulator, the attending physician will schedule the date of discharge from the hospital and give you detailed recommendations for further follow-up and treatment.

About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Medipol Mega University Hospital Istanbul offers the full range of surgical treatment of diseases of the brain and spinal cord in patients of all age groups. To provide emergency medical care, the department operates a specialized Intensive Care Unit. The department has in its arsenal state-of-the-art equipment for surgical navigation and intraoperative imaging, particularly, StealthStation navigation system with 3D imaging of anatomical structures, the O-arm intraoperative computed tomography scanner, the intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging scanner and the Gamma Knife for stereotactic radiosurgical interventions. The Chief Physician of the department is Assoc. Prof. Dr. med. Cem Dinç.

One of the most important places in clinical practice is given to neurosurgical oncology, which is engaged in the surgical treatment of malignant tumors of the nervous system. In both adults and children, the interventions are performed using the very latest microsurgical and endoscopic techniques. Prior to the treatment, the council of doctors, which consists of a neurosurgeon, a radiation therapist, an oncologist and other experts, accurately plan each stage of therapy and the sequence of therapeutic measures (surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy).

The field of competence of the department's specialists also includes surgery for traumatic, congenital and degenerative spinal diseases. The department includes the specialized Center for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery, which performs microsurgical and endoscopic operations (particularly, for the treatment of spinal disc herniation). After surgery, the patient will be prescribed a course of physiotherapy and rehabilitation (in collaboration with the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation).

The experts in functional surgery carry out the implantation of baclofen pumps to patients with spastic syndrome and chronic pain. To treat epilepsy, the doctors implant vagus nerve stimulators.

An integral part of clinical practice is pediatric neurosurgery. The department treats congenital and acquired cerebro-cranial and spinal pathologies in children using microsurgical and endoscopic techniques. The most common diseases, which occur in the department’s patients, include oncological and vascular pathologies, hydrocephalus and spinal dysraphia.

The main activities of the department include:

  • Surgical treatment of vascular pathologies of the nervous system
  • Surgical treatment of cerebral aneurysms
  • Surgical treatment of arteriovenous malformations
  • Carotid endarterectomy (surgery to restore patency of the internal carotid artery)
  • Bypass surgeries
  • Surgical treatment of intracerebral hematoma
  • Surgical treatment of ischemic stroke
  • Indirect cerebral revascularization
  • Decompressive craniectomy
  • Other surgical services
