Orthopedic Center Munich East Munich
Department of Spine Surgery (302842)
Specialized in: spine surgery
The Department of Spine Surgery at the Orthopedic Center Munich East specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, which is performed with the use of the microsurgical technique involving a minimum number of incisions. In addition, the department offers conservative treatment methods for spinal diseases. As a rule, diagnostics involves the use of either magnetic resonance imaging or CT scan, as well as myelography, in specific cases.
The department is headed by Dr. med. Samer Ismail. He is a leading expert in the field of spine surgery in Germany, as evidenced by the certificate of the "spinal neurosurgeon" of the German Society of Neurosurgery, which to date has only been awarded to 25 specialists in Germany. This certificate confirms a particularly high qualification in the field of spinal surgery and allows for the operation of the highest complexity. Since 2003, Dr. Samer Ismail has performed a total of more than 12,000 interventions.
The Department of Spine Surgery is mainly focused on minimally invasive treatment, which uses needles, injections, punctures and ensures a high precision. Minimally invasive procedures do not leave scars (or only small ones) and are usually conducted on an outpatient basis. Thus, the patient has the opportunity to very quickly return to their everyday life.
In the field of prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement, the department has exceptional competence in the use of the following methods: stabilization of the lumbar / cervical spine (PLIF, TLIF, ALIF and XLIF techniques), prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement and dynamic stabilization procedures. Non-fusion spinal surgery applied by Dr. Ismail allows for the preservation of some mobility, even when performing operations to fix segments of the spine.
The department gives particular attention to the treatment of herniated discs. In most cases, such hernias can be treated conservatively (e.g., shockwave therapy). Once a comprehensive diagnostics is completed, the specialists of the center decide on the need for surgical treatment. The department offers many surgical treatment methods. These include, in particular, nucleoplasty, which is a minimally invasive treatment for small hernias. In addition, microsurgical treatment can be performed as well. In this case, doctors use a special operating microscope and special tubes that have a particularly sparing effect on the muscles. The further surgical treatment options include endoscopic surgery, microsurgical decompression and interspinous spacer implantation.
