About the department
The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Preventicum Diagnostic Сlinic Essen provides highly accurate diagnostics and effective treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. The specialists of the medical facility admit patients suffering from pathologies of the stomach, esophagus, small and large intestine, chronic inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome, infectious gastrointestinal diseases and liver diseases. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Philip Hilgard.
The department has modern endoscopic equipment, with the help of which it provides reliable diagnostics and performs interventional therapeutic procedures on the digestive organs, including liver. In addition, the department offers comprehensive screening programs for the prevention or early detection of colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and other pathologies. The department's doctors cooperate closely with the specialists from related medical fields and involve them in both diagnostic or therapeutic processes in especially complex clinical situations.
The most demanded diagnostic methods in the department's clinical practice include gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endosonography, capsule endoscopy, gastrointestinal function tests, esophageal manometry, abdominal ultrasound scanning, including contrast-enhanced ultrasound scanning. Whenever required, computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging can also be conducted. Instrumental diagnostics is complemented by a wide range of laboratory tests carried out in the department's in-house laboratories. The vast clinical experience of the department's doctors combined with state-of-the-art medical equipment forms a solid basis for a comprehensive assessment of the condition of all gastrointestinal organs, making an accurate diagnosis and selecting an optimal treatment regimen. As a rule, most diagnostic tests are performed on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization.
The department's therapeutic options include both drug therapy with the very latest medicines and endoscopic therapeutic procedures that can be performed already at the diagnostic stage. For example, when detecting stenosis, obstruction, stomach and bowel polyps, small gastrointestinal tumors, a gastroenterologist can immediately eliminate the pathological focus during gastroscopy, colonoscopy, etc.
The department provides many effective diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the patients suffering from liver and bile duct diseases. The specialists of the medical facility perform mini-laparoscopy for pathological changes in the liver of unknown origin, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, cholangioscopy, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting for the treatment of the complications of liver cirrhosis and other procedures. In addition, the department uses such innovative treatment methods for liver or biliary tract tumors as transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) and photodynamic therapy.
The department specializes in the diagnostics and treatment of the following diseases:
- Gastroenterology
- Benign and malignant tumors of all gastrointestinal organs
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)
- Gastritis

Curriculum vitae
Prof. Dr. med. Philip Hilgard heads the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Preventicum Diagnostic Сlinic Essen.
In 1995, Prof. Hilgard graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University, after which he started his clinical and scientific training in the Department of Internal Medicine I at the University Hospital Mainz. During that time, Dr. Hilgard had a particular interest in chronic viral liver infections. At that time, this medical field had not yet been studied. Thanks to his preparatory research work, he received a two-year research scholarship from the German Research Foundation in 1999. The internship was devoted to the study of the mechanisms of infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and took place at the renowned Liver Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
In 2002, the specialist held a position in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital Essen.
In 2004, Prof. Philip Hilgard began his work on a research project on hepatocellular carcinoma. The research was carried out at the West German Stomach and Bowel Cancer Center. As part of this research, Dr. Hilgard focused on new concepts in tumor treatment, particularly, selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT). The result of this research was the registration of the biological drug Sorafenib. At the same time, Prof. Hilgard continued his clinical training in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital Essen.
In 2006, the doctor had his board certification in Internal Medicine and became a qualified specialist in Gastroenterology. The special focuses of his clinical activities are endoscopic procedures for the treatment of obstructions and stenoses of the bile ducts caused by bile duct cancer and liver transplantation.
In 2006, Prof. Hilgard had his habilitation. Subject: "Interaction of the virus with the host cell at the initial stage of hepatitis C".
In 2008, the specialist became the Chief Physician of the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Evangelical Hospital Mülheim. Here the doctor treats a wide range of internal diseases, gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Since 2010, Prof. Hilgard has been treating pancreatic diseases along with Prof. Dr. med. Heinz-Jochen Gassel (since 2012, Evangelical Hospital Mülheim has been a supraregional Pancreatic Cancer Center certified by the German Cancer Society).
Dr. Hilgard is not only engaged in scientific and clinical activities, publication of scientific works, but also takes an active part in the training of medical students. He annually organizes practical sessions for his colleagues at the clinic on the subject "Innovations in Internal Medicine at the Mülheim Hospital".
The specialist is a member of many professional societies, including the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS), the German Association of the Study of the Liver (GASL) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).
