Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a hematologic cancer that affects the bone marrow. Some of the bone marrow cells become pathologically altered (dysplastic) and cannot produce normal blood cells. Instead, defective cells are produced, which quickly die and cannot fulfill their functions. There are different types of myelodysplastic syndrome, but most commonly the production of red blood cells is impaired, resulting in severe anemia. In one in three patients, myelodysplastic syndrome is transformed into acute myeloid leukemia.

Stem cell transplant for myelodysplastic syndrome

This procedure is sometimes performed. It is the only way to cure the disease. However, all patients are not treated with stem cell transplant because it is expensive, can cause certain side effects and is mainly suitable for young patients.

Another problem is the availability of donor material. MDS can only be cured by allogeneic transplantation: when a person receives a transplant of donor SCs rather than his own. It is good if the patient has a compatible next of kin. If there is no such person, a suitable donor can be found in the donor database.

However, if the donor is successfully found and the procedure is performed by experienced specialists, the new bone marrow will take root in the recipient's body and will start producing blood cells soon after transplantation. In this case, MDS is highly likely to be cured.

Who is eligible for SCs transplantation

Patients who meet these criteria are considered candidates for SCs transplantation:

  • Young age
  • Good overall health
  • Severe symptoms and very low blood cell count
  • Unfavorable prognosis with regard to further development of the disease, high risk of transformation into acute myeloid leukemia
  • Need for rapid therapeutic outcome due to complications

If after the examination you are recognized as an eligible candidate for a SCs transplant, you can apply to one of the German clinics.
