Thoracic surgery: Pulmonary lymphoma — Resection. Treatment
The incidence of pulmonary lymphoma has been increasing steadily. According to statistics, up to 2 thousand new cases of this disease are registered in Russia annually. The main treatment method for isolated tumor lesions is surgical. Timely intervention allow achieving a full recovery of 70% patients.
Preoperative preparation includes a standard set of tests:
- complete blood count and blood chemistry,
- tests for blood type and Rh factor,
- chest X-ray,
- echocardiography (ECG).
To evaluate the stage of the disease, the lung CT/MRI/ultrasound is also prescribed. The physician evaluates the patient's condition on the basis of clinical examination, case history and test findings.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the tumor extent, there are 2 options:
1. Lobectomy. The affected lobe of the lung is removed.
2. Pneumonectomy. The whole lung (right or left) is removed.
In some cases, lobectomy is performed using endoscopic techniques.
The excised tissue is sent to laboratory for cytological, histological and immunophenotypic studies.
After the procedure, the patient is transferred to the general ward (or to the intensive care unit, if required). During the entire period of rehabilitation, s/he receives medical support by the nursing staff of the clinic. The blood transfusion is performed when required.
The treatment results are evaluated by follow-up studies. To accelerate the recovery, a set of physical treatments is prescribed. In the absence of complications, the patient is discharged 16 hours after examination by the surgeon and receipt of required recommendations.Hide
