The Department of General Surgery at Rambam Health Care Campus deals with five different focuses. These include surgical oncology, endocrine and general surgery, colorectal and inflammatory bowel surgery, metabolic and advanced laparoscopic surgery, acute care and trauma surgery. Each field of surgery is represented by an expert surgeon who leads the related surgical team. The Department is headed by Prof. Yoram Kluger, specialist in the field of general and pancreatic surgery.
Surgical oncology is among the priorities of the Department of General Surgery at Rambam Health Care Campus. The physicians deal with the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from malignant diseases. The most common operations performed by the medical team of the Department include hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic resections, surgery for sarcoma, cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC for various abdominal cavity malignancies, breast surgery and surgery for upper gastrointestinal malignant diseases. Whenever possible, preference is given to laparoscopic and robotic approaches.
Endocrine and general surgery is another focus of the Department of General Surgery under the direction of Prof. Yoram Kluger. The medical team of Rambam mainly works with patients suffering from benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid conditions. The range of surgical services includes operations for hiatal, inguinal, and abdominal wall hernias and midgut malignancies. The surgeries for more complicated abdominal wall defects are performed by a multidisciplinary team that includes a surgeon, a plastic surgeon and a dedicated anesthetist.
The Department of General Surgery at Rambam Health Care Campus also deals with colorectal and inflammatory bowel diseases. There are treated patients with hindgut benign and malignant conditions, as well as patients suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel diseases). The medical team performs resection of benign and malignant diseases of the rectum and colon, laparoscopy and restorative surgery in ulcerative colitis.
In addition, the Department of General Surgery at Rambam under the direction of Prof. Yoram Kluger specializes in metabolic and advanced laparoscopic surgery. The patients with metabolic disorders and obesity can be treated. The most common operations include diverse bariatric procedures (sleeve gastrectomy, the Scopinaro procedure, gastric bypass), complex remedial surgery for patients who failed to lose weight by means of reduction procedures, laparoscopic resection of the adrenal gland and spleen and Heller myotomy for achalasia of the esophagus.
Acute care and trauma surgery are also of great importance in the Department of General Surgery at Rambam Health Care Campus. It works with patients arriving at the Emergency Medicine Department with acute surgical diseases and/or various types of injuries.
The Department of General Surgery annually receives 6,000 patients and performs almost 3,000 surgical procedures.
