The Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Rambam Health Care Campus diagnoses and treats children with inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal system. The Department is headed by Prof. Ron Shaoul. The Department also includes separate units specializing in liver diseases and lipids. In addition, the physicians of the Department are involved in a variety of clinical and basic researches.
The Department provides both diagnosis and treatment of the following pediatric diseases:
- Crohn's disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Congenital and acquired liver diseases
- Hirschsprung’s disease
- Esophageal atresia
- Celiac disease
- Peptic ulcer
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Allergies and food intolerance
- Pancreatic diseases
- Stomach pain
In cooperation with Rambam’s Blood Bank, the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition offers an exclusive treatment using plasmapheresis for children with homozygotic familial hypercholesterolemia, diseases of the liver, pancreas and many others. The dietary treatment is prescribed for children with growth disorders, malnutrition, short bowel syndrome, eating disorders, chronic diarrhea, as well as dietary treatment for children with special needs.
Moreover, the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition under the direction of Prof. Ron Shaoul provides a wide range of diagnostic tests, such as measurement of acidity, endoscopy of the upper intestinal tract, rectal biopsy, liver biopsy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy under anesthesia etc.
The Department at Rambam is part of the Technion’s Faculty of Medicine. Thus, there are trained many medical students. In addition, there is offered a full fellowship program in pediatric gastroenterology.
