About the department
The Department of Pediatric Orthopedics at the Rambam Health Care Campus Haifa offers all the options of modern medicine for the diagnostics and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in children. The department's doctors have unique experience in correction of curvature and lengthening of the limbs, early diagnostics and treatment of congenital hip dysplasia, as well as in the field of conservative treatment of clubfoot according to the Ponseti method. The young patients receive medical care from the highly qualified doctors who apply all their professional skills for the restoration of the children’s health and mobility. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Mark Eidelman.
It is worth noting that the department was one of the first medical facilities in Israel and around the world, which applied the innovative Taylor Spatial Frame external fixation system. This technology can be used to correct curvature of the lower limbs and to correct the length of the lower limbs with the best possible accuracy.
The department is famous for its outstanding results in lower limb lengthening. The most common technique is the drawing using the Ilizarov apparatus or Taylor Spatial Frame (compression-distraction apparatus with external fixation). Another method is the use of an intramedullary rod in combination with external fixation. This approach reduces the duration of the use of an external fixator.
The department also successfully treats clubfoot. For this purpose, the doctors use the Ponseti method, the essence of which is the regular application and change of plaster dressings with simultaneous manual correction of the foot. After that, the child will wear a corrective device for several years, namely the Denis Browne Bar (shoes with a metal plate, which is fixed at the right angle, firmly fixing the feet). As a rule, if all the doctor's prescriptions are followed, the recovery occurs in 100% of cases, while relapses are extremely rare.
The department's range of medical services includes:
- Hip ultrasound scanning for the diagnostics of hip dysplasia
- Pelvic osteotomy
- Limb lengthening according to the Ilizarov technique
- Radiofrequency ablation for osteoid osteoma
- Surgical correction of lower limb deformities
- Surgical correction of hallux valgus
- Treatment of Perthes' disease
- Non-surgical treatment techniques
- Drug therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Use of crutches
- Splinting or casting
- Elongation of joints using weights

- Contracture correction
- Hip reconstruction
- Removal of excess bone tissue or articular muscle (detached cartilage)
- Joint replacement surgery
