About the department
The Department of Pediatric Pulmonology at the Rambam Health Care Campus Haifa offers the full service range for the diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the lungs and other respiratory organs in children. Of particular interest is medical care for young patients with bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis and various chronic lung diseases. The department is one of five specialized Cystic Fibrosis Centers in Israel. The department has at its disposal state-of-the-art equipment, which allows the doctors to carry out the accurate diagnostics and effective treatment of pulmonary pathologies of varying severity. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Lea Bentur.
To achieve the optimal treatment results, the department's medical team uses the very latest techniques, including pulmonary function testing using video games, methacholine provocative test in preschool children, determination of nitric oxide (NO) levels for the diagnostics and assessment of treatment effectiveness in bronchial asthma, the cutting-edge imaging system using sound waves, etc.
In some cases, young patients need a tracheostomy. It is a surgery, which connects the tracheal cavity with the environment. Such an operation can be performed in the case of a threat of obstruction of the upper respiratory tract or during the preparation for prolonged mechanical ventilation. The department has the special Section of Tracheostomy, which specializes in such operations.
The department has the Research Center, within which the pulmonologists carry out their own research projects. One of these works is devoted to comparing of the informativeness of a provocative test using bronchoconstrictors and a methacholine stress test in preschool children.
The pride of the medical facility is a multidisciplinary team consisting of pediatric pulmonologists, nurses, a nutritionist, a physiotherapist, a psychologist, a social workers and a clinical pharmacist. Each specialist sets himself the goal of providing comprehensive medical care, which would be as safe and comfortable as possible for the child.
