About the department
The Department of Gastroenterology at the RKM 740 Gastroenterology Clinic Duesseldorf diagnoses and treats a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases using the latest advances in this medical specialty. The key focus is on endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, esophageal variceal ligation, and others. The department also has a well-developed ultrasound service: patients can undergo here classical ultrasound, high-resolution, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound scans, as well as ultrasound-guided therapeutic procedures, such as ascites puncture. The department's specialists have exceptional expertise in the treatment of oncologic diseases of the digestive system using endoscopic interventions (in the early stages of the oncologic process) and systemic treatment methods such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The department also has successful experience in the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, Zenker's diverticulum, and Barrett's esophagus. The Head Physician of the department is PD Dr. med. Johannes Grossmann.
The department's specialists have extensive experience in the endoscopic treatment of colon polyps and early-stage gastrointestinal malignancies. Polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) are successfully performed here. Each of these procedures is performed using a flexible endoscope equipped with a light source and a miniature video camera. Local anesthesia or sedation is used to eliminate pain during the endoscopic intervention. Endoscopic removal of colon polyps and early-stage gastrointestinal tumors is a modern alternative to full-scale surgery that has proven to be highly effective and safe.
The department also offers systemic methods for the treatment of stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, intestinal cancer, and gallbladder cancer: chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Chemotherapy is one of the most effective methods in the fight against cancer. It involves the intravenous or oral administration of cytostatic drugs to destroy cancer cells in the body. The department's physicians also successfully perform immunotherapy, which uses drugs that activate the patient's immune system to destroy tumor cells in the body. Immunotherapy is an innovative and promising type of treatment with virtually no side effects.
The department's team of gastroenterologists also specializes in the endoscopic treatment of strictures and obstructions of the gastrointestinal tract, often caused by tumors. Dilatation followed by stent placement is performed here to eliminate strictures in the stomach, esophagus, and colon. The essence of the endoscopic procedure is to eliminate the stenosis and implant a stent, which is a special structure in the form of a frame with mesh walls that enlarges the lumen of the affected organ. In most cases, endoscopic stenting of the digestive system is performed for palliative purposes in the advanced stages of cancer.
Endoscopic treatment of esophageal varices using the ligation method completes the therapeutic options of the department. During the treatment procedure, the esophageal varices are ligated with flexible latex rings, resulting in their sclerosis, which means that they are deprived of blood supply. This eliminates the risk of internal bleeding, which can potentially be life-threatening.
