The Department of Cardiology, Peneumology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Medicine (Medical Department I) of the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Nikolaus Marx has been a well-known national and international center for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases for more than three decades. In addition to the normal care units for the patients with cardiovascular and lung diseases, the Medical Department I also has an intensive care unit with 12 beds, the conservative intermediate care unit and the “Chest Pain Unit”(CPU) within the emergency department, where the patients with unclear heart or chest pains can be treated acutely 24/7. 

The special offers of the provided services in the Department of Cardiology, Peneumology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Medicine are non-invasive diagnostic methods, such as 3D-echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging of the heart. The patients with heart and kidney diseases are treated in the newly established Heart-Kidney-Unit. This unit includes 32 beds, which belong to the Department of Cardiology, Peneumology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Medicine together with the department for kidney diseases (Medical Department II for kidney diseases and hypertension, rheumatologic and immunologic diseases). Thus, this new unit is a place, where the specialists of both departments provide care to the patients with heart and kidney diseases. Due to this approach, a particular attention is paid to the sparing treatment of kidneys in the cardiologic patients with kidney diseases. Consequently, the patients with kidney diseases and heart problems recover better and quicker. 

Along with cardiology, one more focus of the Medical Department I at the University Hospital Aachen for already few years has been pneumology.
