The department of pneumology and pneumological oncology at Academic Hospital Bogenhausen deals with the full range of lung and respiratory diseases. The clinic diagnoses and treats tumors of the lung and pleura, inflammatory diseases of the bronchi, lungs and pleura as well as disorders of pulmonary circulation, respiratory diseases, respiratory muscle weakness and nocturnal respiratory disturbances. Both non-invasive methods such as allergy testing and invasive method bronchoscopy are available. The Head of the Department is Prof. Dr. med. F. Joachim Meyer.

According to the Focus magazine rating of 2017, the department of pneumology and pneumological oncology at the Academic Hospital Bogenhausen ranks among the top German departments specializing in lung cancer treatment!

The main priority of the department is  treatment of lung cancer (bronchogenic cancer), tumors of the pleura and respiratory tract. All necessary diagnostic procedures can be promptly performed within the department. Usually, a bronchoscopy is the first one to be performed. A small camera is inserted into the mouth with a flexible hose. This allows the doctor to get the image of the lungs from the inside. As a rule, bronchoscopy is performed simultaneously with ultrasound. This is a great advantage, since air in the lungs can significantly limit the capabilities of the ultrasound.

Also, most stages of lung cancer require the diagnostic program which includes PET / CT, especially before surgical interventions or radiotherapy. In situations where despite even careful diagnosis it is not possible to find a tumor with other diagnostic means, conducting a PET / CT scan can be very useful. Since in most cases, metabolic activity is generally more active in cancer cells, PET can detect the presence of a tumor.

When treating cancer, Academic Hospital Bogenhausen uses scientifically approved therapeutic protocols, which - in collaboration with international experts - are developed by the German Cancer Society. Depending on the type and stage of the disease, radiotherapy, medical chemotherapy or surgery are applied to remove tumor tissues. The combination of methods and their sequence is determined by protocols. It goes without saying that the treatment is not a fixed treatment plan, but that it is individually adapted for each patient.

The main areas of clinical activities of the department include:

  • Lungs' cancer
  • COPD and emphysema
  • Inflammation of the lungs and pleurisy
  • Interdisciplinary Oncology Day Hospital
  • Psychological support / psycho-oncology
  • Advisory Board of Palliative Medicine
