About the department

The Department of Pediatric and Adult Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Plastic Facial Surgery at the St. Vincentius Hospital-Academic Hospital of the University of Freiburg performs diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the ear, nose and throat, and also offers a variety of plastic surgeries for the face. The spectrum of services also covers surgical treatment of thyroid diseases. Particular attention in the department is given to the treatment of speech disorders, which is performed by two qualified speech therapists. The head of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Serena Preyer.

The most important branch of the department is treatment of cancer, which is carried out in close cooperation with other departments of the clinic, because only in this way it is possible to ensure successful results of treatment of such pathologies. For example, treatment of head and neck tumors is carried out in cooperation with the Departments of Surgery and Radiological Oncology, thyroid tumors are treated in cooperation with the Department of Internal Medicine I and the Department of Nuclear Medicine.

A separate direction of the department is plastic-aesthetic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and neck. In this area, the department offers a wide range of classical and advanced surgical interventions and procedures.

Great attention in the department is also paid to speech disorders, swallowing, eating behavior disorders, voice and patients with facial paralysis. In addition to diagnostics and therapy, the speech therapists perform a lot of consultations for both patients and their relatives.

In addition, the department offers diagnostics and therapy of allergic diseases. The specialists focus on the allergies, affecting the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, but they also diagnose and treat allergic skin reactions in the head and neck. 

The department offers a modern diagnosis of all diseases of the head and neck:

  • Endoscopy of the upper respiratory and food tracts
  • Comprehensive studies of the hearing organs and balance, including the so-called neurotological studies
  • Hearing and speech development in infants and children
  • All modern ultrasound examinations for the visualization of soft tissues and vessels in the neck (including the so-called color duplex and Doppler sonography)
  • Integrated research for allergies
  • Studies of the salivary glands
  • Complex studies of voice, speech and swallowing in children and adults

The spectrum of surgical services of the department covers all the surgery and microsurgery in the head and neck area. The department specializes in the following operations in children and adults:

  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery on the auricle
  • Microsurgery of the ear (middle ear, inner ear and neurinoma of the auditory nerve)
  • Outpatient surgery in children with polyps in the throat and middle ear
  • Surgery to remove tumors of the base of the ear and the base of the skull
  • Minimally invasive endosonal sinus surgery with using a microscope, endoscope and computer navigation system
  • Plastic surgery to correct congenital and acquired changes in the form of the external and internal nose
  • Laser nose surgery
  • Surgery of the anterior part of the skull base and facial skull with inflammation, trauma and tumors
  • Operations on the orbit and tear ducts in local pathological changes (in cooperation with the Department of Ophthalmology)
  • Surgery for benign diseases of the oropharynx and larynx (including surgery to improve voice formation)
  • Surgeries to remove large head and neck tumors, laser oncological surgery
  • Plastic reconstructive surgery
  • Operations on the larynx to improve voice
  • Complex operations on the organs of the neck (upper respiratory and food tracts)
  • Operations to remove benign and malignant tumors of the thyroid gland by using a microscope and monitoring nerves
  • Operations on the salivary glands (by using a microscope and monitoring nerves)
  • Surgery of the facial nerve
  • Surgical removal of skin changes in the region of the head and neck with further plastic reconstruction

Conservative treatment:

  • Treatment of severe deterioration of hearing and noise in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Treatment of severe infections of the head and neck area
  • Treatment of acute dizziness in case of vestibular apparatus
  • Palliative treatment of tumors
  • Treatment of violations of voice, speech and swallowing (also in an outpatient setting)
  • Treatment of allergic diseases (mainly in outpatient settings)

The range of services of the department in the field of plastic surgery covers:

  • Correction of the auricles with lop-eared conditions and defects of the auricle (otoplasty)
  • Plastic and cosmetic correction for shape changes and deformations of the nose
  • Wrinkles of the face and neck skin (facelift, augmentation)
  • Blepharoplasty (plastic of the century)
  • Electro- and laser treatment of skin lesions (vascular network, warts, etc.)
  • Correction of pronounced scarring
  • Reconstruction of the auricles in case of defects caused by an accident or a tumor of the auricle
  • Reconstruction of the external nose as a result of defects caused by an accident or disease
  • Removal of tumors of the skin of the face and neck with an early reconstructive plastic
  • Nerve transplantation for restoration of facial nerve function
  • Treatment with epitkezes (replacement of certain areas of the body with silicone)
  • Operations to improve the voice in prolonged hoarseness due to paralysis of the vocal ligament or surgery to remove the tumor
  • Recovery of voice after removal of the larynx
