About the department

The Department of General Surgery at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center under the direction of Prof. Joseph Klauzner treats patients requiring both emergent and planned surgery. The Department leads Israel in a broad range of surgical procedures and shows outstanding success rates. The operations are performed by expert surgeons, trained at the most renowned American medical centers.

The Department of General Surgery at the Sourasky Medical Center is a national referral center for pancreas, liver and biliary system surgeries, soft tissue sarcoma surgery, gastric cancer surgery, debulking operations and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), isolated limb perfusion (ILP), obesity surgery, esophagectomies, advanced laparoscopic surgery, transplantations and others.

There is also provided post-surgical intensive care, which is an integral part of recovery. This progressive approach of combining surgical interventions and postoperative care provides recovery results that are comparable to those of the major surgical centers in Europe and the United States. In order to promote speedy recovery, the Department, headed by Prof. Joseph Klauzner, places special emphasis on personal attention to the patient and his/her family.

The Department of General Surgery at the Sourasky Medical Center is affiliated with the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. The physicians hold academic positions, teach medical students and train specialists in various disciplines of general surgery. The physicians of the Department under the direction of Prof. Joseph Klauzner are involved in intensive research. Specific research fields include cancer development, progression and metastasis, angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis (the formation of blood and lymphatic vessels from pre-existing lymphatic vessels), epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), as well as cancer diagnosis and treatment.
