Specialized in: cardiosurgery, pediatric cardiosurgery, vascular surgery
The Department of Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Böning offers the entire spectrum of cardiac and vascular surgery. The Department specializes in the surgery of coronary arteries, heart valve diseases, cardiac arrhythmias, as well as vascular and aortic surgery. Particular attention is paid to heart transplantation. The medical team performs over 2,000 surgical procedures every year and their results are monitored by federal quality management organizations.
According to the Focus magazine rating of 2017, the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen ranks among the top German departments specializing in cardiac surgery!
An important focus of the Department is heart valve diseases. The treatment involves either heart valve replacement or its reconstruction. Conventional heart valve replacement surgery aims for a long-term result, which means that a single procedure is likely to be enough and the patient won’t need any repeated surgery. When choosing a biological heart valve, the specialists of the Department pay key attention to its longevity: 97% of patients with the biological heart valve prosthesis over the age of 70 can live with this valve without any restrictions for another 15-18 years after surgery.
The Unit of Vascular Surgery, which deals with both surgical and drug treatment of diseases of the arteries and veins with the associated consequences, offers a very wide range of services. Within the framework of services offered in the field of vascular surgery, patients can treat all types of venous and arterial vascular disorders, including vascular malformations. Another focus of the Department is minimally invasive therapy for arterial diseases (endovascular therapy), as well as surgery in combination with catheter techniques (hybrid operations).
The service range of vascular surgery at the University Hospital Giessen includes:
- Carotid artery stenosis
- Circulatory disorders (e.g. in the limbs / organs)
- Dilated arteries (e.g. aortic / abdominal – thoracic aneurysm -aneurysm in the limbs)
- Aortic stenting
- Narrowing of the arteries in the internals
- Varicose veins (including endovascular / laser treatments)
- Surgery for vascular malformations
The University Hospital Giessen has a long tradition in pediatric surgery. Even before the foundation of the independent Department of Cardiac Surgery in 1971, Giessen treated children and adolescents with congenital heart defects. In recent years, the Department has performed an average of about 250 surgical procedures with a cardiopulmonary bypass and about 400 interventions without it. Through the implementation of the Transplant Program Giessen, 140 children and adolescents have undergone heart transplantation. Within the framework of this program the Department can also implant an artificial heart, provide ECMO therapy, as well as autologous stem-cell transplantation for the treatment of cardiomyopathy. The Pediatric Heart Center Giessen offers treatments for the entire range of congenital heart defects in infants, young children, adolescents and adults.
