In addition, the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Jens Peter Klußmann also specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland, treatment of salivolithiasis, laryngeal surgery, surgery on the paranasal sinuses, as well as in the navigational skull base surgery  and surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

The Department has a special competence in the treatment of benign and malignant tumors in the head and neck. As a rule, surgery is the first option for the treatment of malignancies. Cancer treatment involves the use of the very latest surgical techniques, such as laser therapy. The treatment program is developed individually for each patient in order to completely remove the tumor and to preserve important functions. A good example of this is organ preservation laryngeal surgery or sparing endoscopic techniques. Reconstructive surgery, which is another priority of the University Hospital Giessen, also plays an important role in the preservation of function and patient’s recovery.

The patient should remain in close contact with the Department after treatment, where they can have regular outpatient post-operative consultations. The Department of Otolaryngology at Giessen annually treats over 250 new malignant tumors. All malignancies are recorded in the Cancer Center of the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Thus, the Department can check the results of its activities and ensure the quality of cancer treatment.
