About the department

The Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen under the direction of Prof. Dr. Winfried Padberg covers not only the entire spectrum of general surgery, but also thoracic, abdominal and transplant surgery. Cancer surgery at the UKGM deals with the surgical removal of both benign and malignant tumors in different organs.

The Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen pays particular attention to endocrine surgery. The doctors try to use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. To treat thyroid diseases, the Department uses not only open surgical techniques, but also video-assisted minimally invasive surgery. This kind of surgery leaves only a small visible scar (15-20 mm) on the neck. In addition, the range of services also includes a minimally invasive axillo-bilateral-breast approach (ABBA), which leaves no scars on the neck.

The Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen performs surgery on the following endocrine glands

  • Thyroid gland
  • Parathyroid gland
  • Thymus gland
  • Adrenal gland
  • Pancreas

Another cornerstone of the Department is minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

In the field of thoracic surgery, the Department mostly treats the following diseases

  • Surgical treatment of lung cancer
  • Surgery for lung metastases
  • Operative surgery for rare thoracic tumors
  • Special thoracic surgery (interventions on the trachea and central airways, interventional tracheobronchoscopy etc.)
  • General thoracic surgery

The Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen also has a special expertise in transplant surgery. Since 1993, the Transplant Center has successfully performed kidney transplants to treat chronic kidney failure. Since that time, the Center has performed over 500 kidney transplants. The Transplant Center of Giessen leads the federal state of Hesse in the number of performed operations, as well as in the survival rates after transplant and the number of kidney transplants from the living donor.

Lung transplantation can help patients with different terminal lung diseases to improve their quality of life and increase its duration.

Indications for lung transplantation

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, emphysema)
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Primary pulmonary hypertension
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Eisenmenger's syndrome

The priority focuses of the Department of Surgery under the direction of Prof. Dr. Winfried Padberg:

  • Bariatric surgery
  • Endocrine surgery
  • Central interdisciplinary abdominal endoscopy
  • Thoracic surgery
  • Transplant surgery
  • Cancer surgery
