University Hospital Marburg UKGM
Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (114101)
Specialized in: cardiosurgery, thoracic vascular surgery
The Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Marburg UKGM offers the full range of adult cardiac surgery, with the exception of organ transplantation. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Rainer Moosdorf.
The vascular interventions in the large arteries of the chest are also among the main objectives of the specialists working in the department. The main focuses of the department are placed on the surgical treatment of coronary heart disease and its consequences, reconstruction or replacement of the affected heart valves and surgical treatment of heart arrhythmias. The department ranks among the leading scientific centers in Germany in the field of coronary bypass surgery and surgical treatment of end-stage coronary artery disease.
The department provides the entire spectrum of heart valve surgery. Along with coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery is among the most common operations in adults. Most of these operations involve the replacement of the affected heart valve with a biological or mechanical one. This surgery includes a simple replacement of the aortic and mitral valves with biological or mechanical prostheses in the context of isolated interventions on the heart valves or in combination with the surgical treatment of other heart diseases (e.g. bypass). Another focus of the department is reconstructive surgery of heart valves, in which the affected valve can be preserved with complex interventions.
Overall, the medical team of the department annually performs about 1,200 operations, most of which are the so-called open heart surgeries requiring a heart-lung machine.
The range of medical services of the department includes:
- Aortic surgery
- Heart valve surgery
- Aortic valve
- Mitral valve
- Tricuspid valve
- Heart arrhythmias
- Placement of pacemakers
- Atrial fibrillation
- Bypass surgery in coronary artery disease
- Classical coronary artery bypass surgery
- Bypass surgery without a heart-lung machine
