Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (79)

Susanne Fuchs-Winkelmann

Prof. Dr. med.

Susanne Fuchs-Winkelmann

Specialized in: orthopedics and traumatology

The Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at the University Hospital Marburg UKGM offers the full range of modern orthopedics, rheumatology and trauma surgery. The department specializes in the replacement of all large joints (hip, knee, ankle, shoulder and elbow). Considerable importance is ascribed to the renewal of endoprostheses by means of joint replacement surgery, restoration of large bone defects and the use of special implants. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Susanne Fuchs-Winkelmann.

The range of medical services in endoprosthetics includes

  • Conservative treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis
  • Arthroscopy of the hip and knee joints
  • Primary hip replacement surgery (artificial hip joint)
  • Primary knee replacement surgery (artificial knee joint)
  • Replacement of the artificial joint (revision endoprosthetics)
  • Allergies in endoprosthetics - allergy to implants
  • Additional medical report in complex cases

The department has a special expertise in spine surgery. It treats all traumatic spinal cord injuries, osteoporotic vertebral fractures (kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty), as well as spine tumors. Other focuses in this field include both diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory spine disorders, such as spondylitis/spondylodisitis, unstable injuries of the lumbosacral spine, pelvic floor, reconstructive interventions for the consequences of injuries with axial deviations, instabilities and disorders of bone fracture healing.

The Department of Orthopedics is part of the Marburg Comprehensive Cancer Center. It treats both benign and malignant tumors of the musculoskeletal system. As a rule, surgical treatment can preserve a limb. In many cases, bone tumors require the use of complex reconstructive techniques.

In addition, the department pays particular importance to pediatric orthopedics. This focus often deals with the treatment of foot deformities, scoliosis and joint diseases in children. Clubfoot can often be successfully treated with a plaster cast (Ponseti method), which makes it possible to avoid surgery.

The priorities of the department include:

  • Endoprosthetics and hip arthroscopy
  • Hand surgery
  • Arthroscopic surgery and sports traumatology
  • Foot surgery
  • Pediatric orthopedics
  • Sparing trauma surgery
  • Traumatology of the elderly
  • Pelvic surgery
  • Spine surgery
  • Management of complications
  • Trauma Community of Hesse (Traumanetzwerk Hessen)
