About the department

The Department of Gastroenterology at the University Hospital Marburg UKGM under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Mathias Gress specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the digestive organs and endocrine glands, as well as in the treatment of metabolic disorders and infectious diseases. To provide the treatment of this wide range of diseases as best as possible, the department has three focuses: gastroenterology, metabolism and clinical infectology, including the Section of Endoscopy, as well as endocrinology and diabetology. 

Interventional gastrointestinal endoscopy is of particular importance. In addition, the department is very active in the treatment of patients with malignant diseases of the digestive organs, especially diseases of the pancreas, liver and gallbladder or biliary tract, as well as those with neuroendocrine tumors. These focuses of the department are certified by the German Cancer Foundation as the European Competence Center for Neuroendocrine Tumors (ENETS) and as the Center for Colon and Pancreas Cancer.

It is worth mentioning that the department has an extensive experience in the field of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as inflammatory diseases of the pancreas and liver. The patients with these conditions can be treated not only on an inpatient basis, but also in the specialized outpatient clinics. The patients can undergo further diagnosis and therapeutic treatment in the interdisciplinary Center for Ultrasound and Gastrointestinal Functional Diagnosis.
