About the department

The Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Bonn offers the full range of surgical treatment of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. The department also specializes in the treatment of rare neurosurgical pathologies in children, and therefore collaborates with the specialized medical facilities all over the world. The department's tasks include counseling and treatment of adult patients who need further treatment due to the long-term effects of childhood diseases. These include, in particular, complications of meningomyelocele, spinal lipomas, hydrocephalus and spasticity.

The department is headed by one of the best neurosurgeons in Germany – Dr. med. Hannes Haberl. For over 20 years, the doctor regularly held internships in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, St. Louis, San Francisco, Chicago and San Antonio, where he received invaluable experience, mastered the classical and advanced surgical techniques. All this contributes to the highest level of medical care, which makes the department one of the best in Germany and Europe.

The department works in close cooperation with all pediatric departments of the university hospital. In addition, if necessary, pediatricians, pediatric anesthetists, specially trained intensive care doctors, experts in obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric neurology, epileptology, oncology, pediatric orthopedics and pediatric surgery are involved in the process.

It is known that the most accurate diagnostics is the key to successful treatment, so the department carries out all modern examinations, for example, MRI, CT, sonography, X-rays (all examinations are carried out using state-of-the-art equipment, which ensures minimal exposure). The department also offers functional diagnostics (electromyography, measurement of nerve conduction velocity, registration of motor and somatosensory evoked potentials, electroencephalogram). Intraoperative monitoring is widely used during the surgical treatment.

The department is part of the Bonn regional certified Center for Tumors in Children. This certification guarantees the most effective treatment of malignant diseases of the nervous system in children in accordance with the recommendations of the professional neurosurgical societies. In addition, patients can take part in the clinical trials of the very latest drugs and treatment methods.

The main clinical focuses of the department include:

Diagnostics and treatment of cerebral palsy/spasticity

Curriculum vitae

Dr. med. Hannes Haberl is one of the best pediatric neurosurgeons in Germany. The doctor has specialization in Spinal Cord Surgery in children with spasticity. In addition, he performs a unique correction of the skull deformation using the special models.

Prior to work at the University Hospital Bonn, Dr. med. Hannes Haberl made a significant contribution to the development of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Ulm. Previously, for ten years, he headed the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Charite University Hospital Berlin.

After studying in Germany, the doctor went to France and the United States in order to obtain qualifications and new experience in Pediatric Neurosurgery. He was trained by the best world-class specialists. Dr. Haberl mastered modern surgical techniques in Marseille, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco, and then returned to Germany in order to practice them and pass on his experience to other specialists.

It should be noted that the doctor in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatal Medicine at the University Hospital Bonn offers the treatment for spina bifida in the womb. In 2007, he performed the so-called selective dorsal rhizotomy for the first time in Germany. This complex procedure significantly reduces spasticity caused by damage to the spinal cord of newborns. When performing it, Prof. Haberl has extremely limited access to the spine. With the help of the microscope, he selectively produces excision of nerve fibers, which maintain constant muscle tension. Thus, the arc of the nervous reflex, which is the basis of spasticity is interrupted. The doctor carried out more than 140 such interventions in children and ensures the effectiveness of the manipulation.

Also, the neurosurgeon performs a unique worldwide correction of skull malformations. The key moment here is the use of special models of children's heads of normal shape, which help to calculate and create a suitable model for each operation. With the help of special tools, the skull bones can be adapted to the shape of the model up to millimeter.
