About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Oral, Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden offers the full range of services for the diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the teeth and oral cavity, jaw deformities, head and neck neoplasms. High-tech modern equipment helps doctors make an accurate diagnosis, plan surgical intervention and predict its outcomes, while the outstanding professionalism of doctors allows them to treat extremely serious and rare diseases, including complex surgical interventions. The very latest navigation systems are widely used in the department's operating rooms, which ensure high safety of surgical interventions, as well as state-of-the-art laser systems allowing for the therapeutic manipulations in the maxillofacial area to be performed with minimal blood loss. The department provides treatment to more than 1,200 inpatients every year. The medical team takes care that the patient receives high-quality treatment and can return to his usual lifestyle without discomfort. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. The inpatient medical care is mainly provided to the patients with tumors, skull bone fractures, dysgnathia, extensive bone and soft tissue inflammations. Those children who need hospitalization are accommodated in a specialized unit of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

When performing surgical treatment, doctors widely use computer-assisted navigation systems, for example, for the treatment of complex midface fractures. The department also has modern laser techniques. They allow surgeons to perform practically bloodless operations and at the same time ensure a positive result of therapy. For example, the department's surgeons perform laser resection of maxillofacial neoplasms (benign and malignant) and hemangiomas, laser scar revision, etc. The department successfully uses such innovative laser systems as CO2 laser, Nd:YAG laser and diode laser.
