About the department
The Department of Pulmonology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin offers the full range of accurate diagnostics and effective treatment of acute and chronic lung diseases, including infectious pulmonary lesions, on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The department's doctors have advanced equipment, conventional and innovative diagnostic and treatment techniques. All this creates the conditions for the organization of first-class medical care focused on the results and the best possible benefit for the patient. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Martin Witzenrath.
The department's pulmonologists deals with the treatment of obstructive pulmonary diseases (for example, asthma or COPD), restrictive lung diseases (for example, pulmonary fibrosis), pulmonary vascular diseases (pulmonary hypertension), autoimmune diseases and lung cancer. The department demonstrates excellent results in the treatment of lung cancer, due to which it was marked by the quality certificate of the German Cancer Society.
In addition, the department has the Weaning Center (certified by the German Society of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine). The experts in the field of invasive and non-invasive ventilation, as well as the doctors specializing in weaning work here. Curriculum vitae
Prof. Dr. med. Martin Witzenrath has been heading the Department of Pulmonology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin since April 2022. Prior to this, the specialist held the position of Deputy Head Physician of the same department.
Dr. Martin Witzenrath graduated from Justus Liebig University Giessen.
The professor's special clinical interests include the treatment of infectious lung diseases, intensive care for lung diseases, care of patients before and after lung transplant surgery, endoscopic treatment of lung diseases, and therapy for pulmonary hypertension.
The specialist's research activities are focused on preclinical, translational, and clinical studies of pneumonia, acute lung diseases, and pulmonary hypertension.
Prof. Witzenrath is a Fellow of the European Respiratory Society (FERS).

The patients of the Charite University Hospital Berlin live in comfortable rooms made of modern design. Each room is equipped with an ensuite bathroom with a toilet and a shower. The standard room furnishing includes an automatically adjustable bed, a bedside table, a wardrobe for storing clothes, a table and chairs for receiving visitors, and a TV.
