The Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Dusseldorf offers treatment of all dermatological diseases. The head of the Departent is Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Homey. The Department focuses on the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis, the treatment of skin cancer with special consideration of melanoma as well as diagnosis and treatment of allergies. The Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Dusseldorf has over 55 beds and 4 units for patient care. Apart from the treatment on the outpatient basis, the Department of Dermatology under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Homey offers inpatient medical care as well. The outpatient reception of patients is provided in the general outpatient clinic, in the departments of allergies and andrology.
The highly specialized doctors of the Department of Dermatology provide counseling for the patients with skin tumors (malignant melanoma), neurodermatitis, autoimmune skin diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis), wound healing disorders, vein diseases, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), virus diseases (e.g., warts), problems with in the area of the rectum (proctology) as well as for the patients with organ transplants. As the Department cooperates with the Department of Pediatrics, it provides counseling for children with skin problems twice a week. Furthermore, the Department of Dermatology carries out phototherapy: both diagnostic and therapeutic radiation. Apart from phototherapy, the Department focuses on the diagnosis of sun allergies and other forms of intolerance to light.
The Department of Dermatology under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Homey annually performs over 4,000 operations to treat skin tumors. In addition to surgical interventions, the Department of Dermatology also offers non-invasive skin cancer treatments by means of photodynamic therapy (photosensitiser plus light) or topical immunomodulators.
Along with the treatment of skin diseases, the treatment of skin alternations due to the age is getting more and more important. Within cosmetic dermatology, the Department of Dermatology offers various modern methods. In addition to surgery, there are also used different laser therapy methods, chemical peeling, injections of botulinum toxin type A etc.
