The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University Hospital  Dusseldorf  is a national and international centre for vascular medicine. The kidney transplantation has been a strong point of the Department since 1974. The head of the Department is Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hubert Schelzig.

The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University Hospital  Dusseldorf  develops and uses the most advanced surgical techniques. A specially trained team of the Department under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hubert Schelzig has expert knowledge and experience in the treatment of all vascular areas of the body, except the coronary vessels. As a national reference hospital, the Department is often asked to issue additional medical opinions on vascular diseases.

Over the past 30 years the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery has become the center of supra-regional importance for blood vessel surgery and kidney transplant. Annually the Department performs about 1,200 operations on the aorta, arteries and veins and about 120 kidney transplants (25% of them are from living donors).

The Department makes every effort for the patient to benefit from unique opportunities of the University Hospital  Dusseldorf. These opportunities are realized by the foundation of the German Center for Aortic Diseases Dusseldorf (DAD), the University Center for the Treatment of Wounds (UWZ) as well as  the University Center for Vascular Diseases Dusseldorf (UGD). The aim of all physicians and staff workers under the direction of  Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hubert Schelzig is to offer patients a sparing, customized as well as minimally invasive treatment, whenever possible, at the university hospital level.

The treatment focuses of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University Hospital  Dusseldorf  include:

  • Carotid artery stenoses
  • Expansion of the carotid arteries
  • Kidney transplant
  • Varicose veins
  • Blood circulation disorders in pelvis and leg vessels
