The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Erlangen belongs to the largest ENT departments in Germany with its 80 approved beds, 6 operating rooms, an Intensive Care Unit with 5 beds and a university outpatient clinic with 9 wards. The Department also includes an independent Section of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology with a professional speech therapy school. The Department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Iro.
The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Erlangen offers patients the entire diagnostic, conservative, therapeutic and surgical spectrum of otolaryngology as well as head and neck surgery. The Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Iro is one of the few medical institutions in Germany that has been certified in accordance with the quality management system DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 (since 2011). Furthermore, it was certified by the Head and Neck Cancer Center (a certificate of the German Cancer Society).
Ear microsurgery makes up an important focus of the Department. The Department of Otolaryngology at the University Hospital Erlangen annually performs a total of 700 middle ear operations with a preceding comprehensive diagnosis. There are used microsurgical techniques that enable a very sparing surgery with the use of a microscope or a binocular microscope. These operations are mostly performed through the external auditory canal without inflicting any cosmetic sequelae.
The main focuses of the Department of Otolaryngology include not only head and neck surgery, but also thyroid surgery. The patients with thyroid diseases are offered a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the comprehensive treatment. There are also treated suspicious thyroid nodules that can cause complaints. Moreover, the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Iro specializes in the surgical removal of thyroid and parathyroid, as well as malignant lymph nodes in neck area.
