The Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Erlangen is an internationally recognized Center of Excellence in diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases. Over 3,000 inpatients (46 inpatient beds, 10 beds in the day hospital) and about 30,000 outpatients are annually treated here in accordance with the latest scientific achievements. Since December 2002, the quality management system of the Department of Dermatology has been certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2008. The Department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. univ. Gerold Schuler.
The Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Erlangen explores new possibilities for the treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. Patients with malignant melanoma can be treated using a special immunotherapy even at the progressing stages. This therapy, developed jointly with the Nobel Prize winners, Professor Ralph Steinman (Rockefeller University, New York) and Professor Gerold Schuler, is currently available only in a few hospitals in the world.
The main treatment focuses of the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Erlangen under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. univ. Gerold Schuler are:

- Allergies, including production and environmental dermatology

- Hair and scalp diseases
