The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Frankfurt offers patients the full range of advanced ophthalmic treatments. The head of the Department of Ophthalmology is Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. T. Kohnen. The Department is one of the most advanced and well-equipped departments of ophthalmology in Germany and offers ultramodern treatment methods for eye diseases. 

Annually over 30,000 patients are treated here on both outpatient and inpatient basis. There is provided the entire spectrum of current diagnostic and therapeutic treatment methods for anterior and posterior eye segments, optic nerve, eyelids and lacrimal passages, eye orbit and strabismus. Due to an active research work, the Department of Ophthalmology develops innovative methods of medical care. A wide range of university educational programs with highly qualified teachres provide an excellent education of the future medical professionals. The goal is to preserve or restore eyesight for both professional and private life up to the elderly age as the quality of life is determined by the quality of eyesight. 

The Department of Ophthalmology under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. T. Kohnen specializes in the following areas:

  • Treatment of cataract by means of femtosecond laser LenSx or by means of new trifocal implants
  • Treatment of presbyopia (old age sight) by means of lasers and/or implants
  • Treatment of myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness) by means of modern lasers and implants 
  • Treatment of age-related macular dystrophy by means of the advanced medication and laser therapy
  • Treatment of ceratoconus: UV-fusion and riboflavin
  • Minimally invasive ophthalmic surgery
  • Orthoptic office

About hospital

The University Hospital Frankfurt is a part of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. The hospital with rich traditions was founded in 1914 and is a famous one in Germany. Annually about 50,000 inpatients and 220,000 outpatients are treated in this hospital. The main objective of 32 specialized departments and clinical and theoretical institutes is to provide the best possible patient care.

Through a close link with science the hospital cooperates with 20 research institutes of the Medical Department – new medical developments are quickly implemented into the patient care. The hospital has 1,286 beds. The numerous institutes are devoted to specific medical and scientific problems. Patients rooms

The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.

Meals and Menus

The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.
