About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of Thoracic, Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Frankfurt is a distinguished institution in this field of medicine. The Department specializes in coronary artery bypass syrgery, heart valve surgery, aortic surgery, lung surgery and transplant surgery. The head of the Department is Prof. Dr. med. A. Moritz.

One of the focuses of the Department of Thoracic, Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Frankfurt under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. A. Moritz is coronary artery bypass surgery. The coronary artery bypass surgery is a standard surgical method to treat patients with the diseases of one or few coronary arteries. The heart lung machine, which performs a heart pump function, is used during the coronary surgery. The goal is to provide optimal treatment to the patient. It also meams minimization of the operational trauma. Unfortunately, extracorporeal circulation created by the machine exerts load on the organism and not all patients endure its use rather good. Therefore, the Department of Thoracic, Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Frankfurt also performs operations on the beating heart. The main aim of this kind of surgery is to reduce possible complications after surgery, especially in the patients with severe and comorbid conditions.

The Department is also engaged into an active research activity in order to analyse the problems occurring after clinical treatment and to develop operating strategies.
