The Department of General, Abdominal and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Jena covers the clinical focuses of general surgery, abdominal surgery, vascular surgery. It also offers care for patients after transplantation, conducts clinical studies, provides advanced training for the medical pesonal and training of future doctors. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Utz Settmacher.
The department is especially focused on the treatment of tumors. To provide modern, comprehensive treatment, the department closely cooperates with other departments of the University Hospital Jena (gastroenterology, oncology, radiation therapy, radiology, pathology, etc.). The interdisciplinary tumor boards serve for a detailed discussion of treatment options for cancer patients. In certain cases, the treatment can be integrated into clinical trials so that all patients could benefit from the latest scientific advancements. To provide a speedy recovery of patients, the medical team uses sparing surgical techniques (e.g. minimally invasive surgery).
Another priority of the department is the treatment of vascular diseases. There are applied all modern techniques of open and endovascular surgery. The department works in close cooperation with the partners in the field of angiology, radiology, nephrology and neurology within the Center for Vascular Diseases.
