About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the University Hospital Münster ranks among large university surgery centers of Germany. The Department specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies (gastrointestinal tract) as well as hormone-producing (endocrine) organs. The Department is headed by Prof. Dr.med. Dr.h.c. Norbert Senninger, specialist in surgery, vascular and visceral surgery.

Tumor treatment involves the most advanced methods in cooperation with other disciplines (oncology, radiation therapy, interventional radiology). To treat peritoneal carcinosis, there is also provided hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The Department is certified in the following focuses: Center for Colon and Pancreatic Cancer (by the German Cancer Center), Center for the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract and Pancreas (by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery), Center for Pelvic Organs (by the German Center for Continence).

Other priority focuses of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the University Hospital Münster are liver, pancreas, small intestine and kidney transplant as well as the treatment of inflammatory bowel and pancreatic diseases. A wide range of common surgical techniques is also completed by all advanced methods of general, visceral and minimally invasive surgery.

Furthermore, the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr.med. Dr.h.c. Norbert Senninger  is the recognized Center for Implantation of the Venous Infusion Systems (intravenous port, food catheter), dialysis bypass surgery and catheterization. The interdisciplinary Center for Pelvic Organs deals with the treatment of all pelvic floor disorders as well as specific forms of fecal incontinence and defecation disorders. A private Endoscopy Unit specializes in care of postoperative complications with the use of all modern techniques, including vacuum therapy.

The Surgery Unit has state-of-the-art equipment. The primary importance should be given to intraoperative ultrasound diagnosis of tumors, metastases and vessels (Doppler, duplex surgical scan), intraoperative heat treatment (radiofrequency ablation RFA) and selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) for liver tumors as well as intraoperative radiation therapy for tumors (IORT). The success of the therapy as well as analgesic measures is ensured through the activity of the specialized unit (Unit of Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine) and the Intenive Care Unit.
