About the department
The Department of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergology and Cardiology at the University Hospital Oldenburg offers a full range of medical services in its areas of specialization. The medical facility provides comprehensive diagnostics and effective treatment of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular pathologies, and allergic reactions in children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years. In the field of pulmonology, the treatment of bronchial asthma, obstructive bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, cystic fibrosis, and interstitial lung diseases is of special interest. The direction of allergology is responsible for the medical care of young patients with hay fever, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, food intolerance, pollen allergy, pet allergy, insect venom allergy, and drug allergy. Therapeutic options are complemented by the treatment of heart disease such as congenital and acquired heart defects, arrhythmias, arterial hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and infectious lesions of the heart muscle and valves. The department has excellent technical resources to provide effective medical care to young patients. The department has been awarded the Ausgezeichnet. FÜR KINDER quality certificate, awarded only to the best children's hospitals in Germany. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Axel Heep.
The department's team of pulmonologists provides diagnostics and treatment of the whole spectrum of acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs in children. The department mostly treats young patients with bronchial asthma, obstructive bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, chronic cough, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and pulmonary hypertension. Bronchial asthma is a chronic disease based on allergic inflammation. With this pathology, the reaction of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tree to certain conditions is disrupted: high or low temperature and humidity, inhalation of allergens (pollen, wool, and dust mites), contact with drugs and chemicals, physical activity, stressful situations, etc. A dysfunctional immune inflammation develops in the bronchi: the mucous membrane swells and produces excess mucus for protection. In bronchial asthma, the mucus thickens, partial or complete obstruction of the bronchi develops, as a result of which breathing becomes difficult and the child experiences attacks of painful coughing. The pathology manifests itself in attacks, the characteristic signs of which are severe difficulty breathing and its acceleration, a feeling of tightness in the chest, wheezing, blue lips and nails, anxiety, and fear. The main method of treatment of bronchial asthma is drug therapy with inhalers. An important role is also played by the elimination of factors from the child's daily life that can provoke an attack, such as allergens, stressful situations, overexertion, etc.
The therapeutic offer in the field of allergology includes the treatment of children and adolescents. The department provides medical care for young patients with hay fever, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, anaphylactic shock, pollen allergy, pet allergy, mold allergy, insect venom allergy, food allergy, and drug allergy. The department offers a variety of allergy tests: prick tests, epicutaneous tests, nasal provocation tests, food provocation tests, and special allergen blood tests. The department's specialists often conduct allergen-specific immunotherapy to treat allergies, in which small doses of an allergen are gradually introduced into the child's body, making the allergic reaction less pronounced and minimizing or eliminating the development of symptoms. In the treatment of allergies, the doctors of the department also use oral medications, ointments, and gels for local application.
The department's team of pediatric cardiologists is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in fetuses, infants, young children, and adolescents. The department has many years of experience in the care for children with congenital and acquired heart defects, heart rhythm disturbances, arterial hypertension, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and endocarditis. The medical facility has excellent diagnostic rooms with state-of-the-art equipment for electrocardiography, spiroergometry, color Doppler echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography of the heart (in cooperation with the Department of Radiology). The department also offers fetal cardiology services in cooperation with the Department of Prenatal Diagnostics: the specialists perform cardiological examinations to detect heart defects and arrhythmias during the intrauterine development of the fetus. The cardiologists of the department cooperate with many renowned Pediatric Heart Centers in Kiel, Hanover, Hamburg, Bonn, Goettingen, Duisburg, and other cities in Germany. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Treatment includes drug therapy and interventional catheter-based procedures in an advanced cardiac catheterization laboratory adapted to the needs of young patients.
