About the department

The Department of Dermatology and Allergology at the University Hospital Oldenburg offers the full range of services in these medical fields. The department was founded in 1996, and therefore offers long experience and unique treatment methods of dermatological and allergic diseases. The department provides both conservative and surgical treatment of pathological skin lesions, including dermatohistology. The department has 33 inpatient and 15 day patient beds. With appropriate indications, the treatment may be outpatient. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Ulrike Raap.

The department specializes in the diagnostics and treatment of the following dermatological diseases:

  • Hereditary diseases and malformations
  • Infectious skin diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites
  • Skin diseases caused by physical factors and chemicals
  • Chronic inflammatory skin diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Occupational dermatoses
  • Skin manifestations of connective tissue systemic diseases
  • Diseases of skin appendages
  • Skin tumors
  • Diseases of the skin pigment system
  • Pathological skin changes caused by vascular diseases
  • Other pathological skin lesions

Of particular interest to the department is the diagnostics and treatment of all tumors of the skin and its appendages. It offers many modern diagnostic procedures for the detection of skin tumors, for example, microscopy using magnifying glass, high-resolution ultrasound for skin and lymph node testing. The treatment of skin cancer involves the radical tumor removal followed by histological examination, while precancerous diseases can be treated with cryotherapy, laser technology or photodynamic therapy. The patients with increased risk of cancer recurrence are usually prescribed immunomodulating drugs. The progressive stages of skin cancer are treated in collaboration with the Department of Oncology and Hematology. In addition, the department's tasks include the treatment of skin lymphomas, for which the doctors use phototherapy, photochemotherapy and, in special cases, photopheresis.

The department also specializes in the treatment of chronic wounds, venous diseases and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The therapeutic options for the elimination of these problems include both conservative and surgical techniques.

It is also worth noting that the department takes care of the patients' psychological health. Stresses can adversely affect the course of the disease and treatment, which leads to significant decrease in the quality of life. In addition, serious and chronic diseases, such as cancer, can lead to sudden changes in the life of patients, so the department has specially trained psychologists who help patients and their relatives to cope with emotional stress.

In the field of allergology, the department offers the diagnostics and treatment of all types of allergic diseases. The big advantage of the department is the presence of its in-house Allergology and Immunology Laboratories, which carry out the full range of skin, mucous membrane testing, and also conduct provocative tests using various allergens.

The department's range of medical services includes:

  • Allergology
    • Skin tests
      • Prick test
      • Intradermal test
      • Patch test
      • Photopatch test
    • Special blood tests (serological blood test, FAST)
    • Skin, oral and nasal provocation tests
    • Pulmonary function test (spirometry)
    • Immunotherapy (hyposensitization)
  • Dermatology
    • Sampling (skin, muscles, nerve endings, lymph nodes)
    • Superficial skin purification in its lesions (for example, curettage)
    • Electrosurgery and liquid nitrogen freezing
    • Dermabrasion
    • Laser surgery
    • Removal of malignant and benign skin neoplasms
    • Removal of tumors
    • Surgical scar revision
    • Elimination of defects using skin flap plastic surgery
    • Skin transplantation (free skin grafts)
    • Phototherapy
    • Photochemotherapy
    • Photodynamic therapy
    • Photopheresis
    • Systemic and local treatment using immunostimulating and cytostatic drugs
  • Other treatment methods
