The department mostly treats young patients with bronchial asthma, obstructive bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, chronic cough, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and pulmonary hypertension. Bronchial asthma is a chronic disease based on allergic inflammation. With this pathology, the reaction of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tree to certain conditions is disrupted: high or low temperature and humidity, inhalation of allergens (pollen, wool, and dust mites), contact with drugs and chemicals, physical activity, stressful situations, etc. A dysfunctional immune inflammation develops in the bronchi: the mucous membrane swells and produces excess mucus for protection. In bronchial asthma, the mucus thickens, partial or complete obstruction of the bronchi develops, as a result of which breathing becomes difficult and the child experiences attacks of painful coughing. The pathology manifests itself in attacks, the characteristic signs of which are severe difficulty breathing and its acceleration, a feeling of tightness in the chest, wheezing, blue lips and nails, anxiety, and fear. Prof. Dr. med. Axel Heep is the Head Physician of the Department of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergology and Cardiology at the University Hospital Oldenburg. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne. From 1999 to 2009, he was Deputy Head Physician of the Department of Neonatology at the University Hospital Bonn. Following his habilitation and professorship, Dr. Axel Heep became the Head Physician of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Municipal Hospital Munich and also took up the position of Research Fellow in the Department of Neonatology at the University Hospital Bonn. A special focus of Prof. Axel Heep's research is the study of brain development in early childhood. Prof. Heep is board certified in Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and has additional qualifications in Neonatology.
