About the department

The Department of Mammology, Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University Hospital Oldenburg offers the full service range in these medical fields. The department has 3 operating rooms, where highly qualified doctors perform more than 3,000 operations annually. The department is equipped with 74 beds and 6 beds for outpatient surgeries. Also, the department delivers about 2000 babies every year. All diagnostic and therapeutic services meet the international medical standards. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Eduard Malik.

The department has been providing services in the field of mammology for over 20 years. The comprehensive diagnostics is carried out here prior to the treatment and after its completion. Thanks to early detection and constantly developing treatment methods, the chances of the full recovery in breast cancer have increased significantly over the last decades. The department's doctors are guided by national and international treatment standards and take an active part in their updating. The department also cooperates closely with other departments of the hospital, for example, with the Departments of Radiology, Hematology, Radiation Therapy, the Department of Nuclear Medicine and others, which allows to achieve the positive result. In 2004, the department was recognized as the certified center in accordance with the requirements of the German Cancer Society, the German Society for Senology and ISO 9001.

The full range of conservative and surgical treatments of the female reproductive system is offered in the field of gynecology. Particular attention is paid to the surgical treatment of uterine, cervical, ovarian and vaginal cancers. With appropriate indications, the preference is given to minimally invasive interventions, which in comparison with open surgery, are more sparing and facilitate the rapid recovery of patients. Since the diagnosis of cancer affects the emotional state of the patient, the department offers the services of a competent psychologist.

In addition, the department's feature is the Section for Cervical Dysplasia certified by the German Cancer Society.

In the field of obstetrics, the department offers comprehensive medical care before, during and after childbirth for the mother and baby. The department has 3 ultramodern delivery rooms equipped with special obstetric bed-chairs and monitoring systems. In addition to classic obstetric services, the department also offers aromatherapy baths, homeopathy and acupuncture.

The patients also benefit from a relaxation room, a separate room equipped with a bath for childbirth in water, a diagnostic room, a room for medical care for newborns and an operating room for C-section.

Thanks to modern methods of prenatal diagnostics, the Section for Ultrasound Diagnostics and Prenatal Therapy, as well as the services of the Center for Clinical Genetics and Cytogenetics, the department's specialists are able to detect fetal malformations in utero and take all necessary measures in order to eliminate them.

Curriculum vitae

Since 1 April 2006, Prof. Eduard Malik has been the Head of the Department of Mammology, Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University Hospital Oldenburg. Prior to this, the doctor worked in the Department of Gynecology at the University Hospital Regensburg. His clinical focuses include the treatment of malignant diseases of the female reproductive organs, minimally invasive surgery. The doctor’s scientific activities are focused on endometriosis research.

The patient rooms of the pediatric departments are designed in an appropriate interior so that the young patients feel at home. It is offered to place the child in one room with one of the parents.
