The Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy at the University Hospital Saarland Homburg performs many tasks. One of the main activities of the department is pain therapy. It provides an optimal treatment of acute and chronic pain syndromes. In the field of intensive care medicine, the department specializes in the treatment of polytrauma, traumatic brain injury, sepsis, pulmonary, hepatic and renal insufficiency, as well as multiple organ failure. The service range is complemented by outpatient premedication. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Volk.
The department employs about 60 doctors and 53 nurses, who annually perform about 22,000 anesthesia procedures. After preoperative diagnostics and clarification of the clinical situation, anesthesiologists conduct a general or local anesthesia for the patient. Most of the anesthesia procedures are performed in the central operating room, where general and pediatric surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons and trauma surgeons operate.
In the field of intensive care medicine, the department’s priorities are:
- Treatment of patients with polytrauma
- Treatment of patients with multiple organ failure
- Treatment of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
- Treatment of patients before and after liver transplantation
- Emergency medical care
- Treatment of patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation
