About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Urology at the University Hospital Saarland offers the full range of services in this medical focus. The department specializes in the treatment of kidney, adrenal, ureter, bladder, urethral and prostate diseases in men, as well as reproductive organs in men, women and children. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Michael Stöckle.

The main clinical focuses of the department include all procedures for urinary diversion, including plastic repair and bladder replacement, organ-preservation kidney operations, radical surgery to remove tumors in prostate cancer with the use of nerve-preserving techniques. In addition, the specialization of the department covers kidney transplantation (within the framework of the specialized center). Naturally, the department offers a wide range of conservative treatments, for example, brachytherapy in prostate cancer (in collaboration with radiotherapists), adjuvant and palliative chemotherapy for testicular, bladder, kidney, prostate cancer.

Within the framework of outpatient medical care, there are provided special consultations for cancer patients, diagnostic tests in prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, andrological services, including examinations to identify or exclude infertility, advice on problems with conception and infertility.

A unique feature of the department is the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Center, within the framework of which a number of effective minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of prostate cancer (more than 3,700 successful prostatectomies, starting from 2006), bladder cancer and kidney tumors are performed. Minimally invasive surgeries with the help of an innovative robotic Da Vinci system have a number of advantages: minimal pain, minimal blood loss and a short period of hospital stay. It is also worth noting that the surgical system does not work independently, but is controlled by the operating physician. Thus, the robot acts as an "assistant", which absolutely accurately, without the slightest deviation, realizes surgeon’s decisions.
