The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital of Würzburg offers surgical treatment of all congenital and acquired heart and lung diseases in adulthood, including heart transplant. The director of the Department is Professor Dr. med. Rainer G. Leyh.

Due to the use of the most advanced cardiac support systems and tight cooperation with other institutions at the University Hospital of Würzburg, the Department, performing 1,500 operations a year, is very well prepared for the treatment of emergency and high-risk patients. 

The Department has a unique experience in thoracic aortic surgery, where modern techniques, such as stent implantation, are getting more and more important. In cooperation with the Department of Cardiology, there is sometimes provided minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. The Department under the direction of Professor Dr. med. Rainer G. Leyh is a leader in Germany with a very low level of perioperative mortality.

The Section of Thoracic Surgery is part of the Multidisciplinary Cancer Center of East Franconia.
