The Department of Hematology, Oncology, Palliative Medicine, Pneumology and Somnology at the District Hospital of Waldbröl (Medical Department III) has 30 beds. There is also an assistant undertaking training as an internist. Two specialists have additional specialization in the field of palliative medicine and the chief physician of the Department, Dr. med. Stefan Brettner, internist, specialist in the field of hematology and internal medicine, oncology of the internal organs, palliative medicine, has an additional qualification in somnology of the German Sleep Society. 

The Department at the District Hospital of Waldbröl treats patients with cancer of the internal organs, bone marrow and lymph nodes on both outpatient and inpatient basis. The doctors of the Department under the direction of Dr. med. Stefan Brettner are highly competent in diagnosis and treatment of cancer of lungs, lymph nodes, leukemia and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The Department also meets all current recommendations in the treatment of prostate, kidney, bone and soft tissue cancers. An innovative approach in treatment involves genetic study of cancer on its molecular vulnerable points. This is carried out in order to eliminate the mechanisms that are responsible for the tumor growth and development of metastases.
