The department of neurology, neurophysiology and neuropsychology at Academic Hospital Bogenhausen, numbering 81 beds, diagnoses and treats patients with acute and chronic diseases of the entire neurological spectrum using modern medical achievements. The department specializes in treatment of all diseases of the brain and brain supplying arteries, diseases of the spinal cord, as well as diseases of peripheral nerves and musculature. Every year more than 3,700 patients receive assistance in inpatient care. The Head of the Department is Prof. Dr. med. Helge Topka.
The most important diseases treated by the Bogenhausen clinic include neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia, inflammatory diseases of the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis and paroxysmal diseases (eg, epilepsy) and also stroke.
Head physician of the department, professor and doctor of medicine Helge Topka organized a specialized center for the treatment of patients with stroke (stroke unit) more than 10 years ago. Currently, about 1200 of these patients are treated annually out of a total of 4,500 patients from all Munich. In 2016, the center received a re-certification according to the standards of the German Society for Stroke Control.
