About the department
The Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Oncology at the Brothers of Mercy Hospital Munich provides the broadest range of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic services in these medical fields. The medical facility admits patients with diseases of the stomach, small and large intestines, esophagus, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary tract. Of particular interest to the department's specialists is the treatment of malignant pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract and hepatopancreatobiliary area. The doctors of the medical facility cooperate closely with the Department of General and Abdominal Surgery and the Department of Cardiology and Pulmonology. In the course of treatment, the latest functional and general diagnostics options are used, and effective treatment methods are adapted to the patient's individual needs. The department has state-of-the-art equipment for endoscopic examinations and therapeutic procedures. Doctors and nursing staff always show a humane attitude towards their patients, striving to support them on their way to recovery. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Christian Rust.
Gastroenterology offers prevention, diagnostics and treatment of all gastrointestinal diseases. The most common pathologies in the practice of the department's doctors are gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastrointestinal tumors, pancreatic diseases (acute and chronic pancreatitis with functional disorders and complications), bowel diseases (for example, chronic diarrhea, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis) and functional gastrointestinal disorders (functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome). The service range also includes the treatment of benign and malignant neoplasms of these organs.
Modern methods of sonography and endoscopy are used for making an accurate diagnosis, and the patient's medical history is also studied in detail. The department has four endoscopy rooms with state-of-the-art high-resolution video endoscopes with Full HD technology. Patients can undergo precise endoscopy and chromoendoscopy. With approximately 7,500 endoscopic procedures annually, the department ranks among Munich's largest and most competent endoscopy centers. The department also offers excellent opportunities for ultrasound diagnostics (certification from the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine). Ultrasound diagnostics is carried out on advanced and high-precision devices. The medical facility conducts about 16,000 general examinations annually and more than 1,000 contrast-enhanced ultrasound scans.
Hepatology is another priority area of the department's work. Patients can undergo comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of liver diseases: viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, etc. In addition to classical treatment methods, the department's doctors use various interventional procedures (in cooperation with the Department of Interventional Radiology). For example, therapeutic options include transarterial chemoembolization, radiofrequency and microwave ablation, and so on.
The team of the department's experienced oncologists is engaged in the prevention, diagnostics, treatment and follow-up monitoring of patients with malignant diseases. There is a specialized Abdominal Cancer Center in the department, which is certified by the German Cancer Society and is part of the Cancer Center Munich. Thanks to the active cooperation of specialists from various medical fields, the highest quality of cancer therapy is ensured. Treatment is based on an individual approach, and therefore after establishing a diagnosis, each clinical case is considered at an interdisciplinary tumor board, during which doctors develop an optimal therapy regimen. The department's specialization in oncology includes colorectal, liver, stomach, esophageal, pancreatic, gallbladder and bile duct cancers. Specialized surgeons are responsible for surgical resection of the tumor, and the department's oncologists provide conservative treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, antibody therapy and other systemic treatments.
