About the department

According to the Focus magazine, the Department of Orthopedics, Traumatology, Spinal Surgery and Foot Surgery at the Brothers of Mercy Hospital Munich ranks among the top German medical facilities in treating orthopedic diseases and spinal surgery!

The department carries out comprehensive examinations and effectively treats musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. The department has about 130 beds for its patient hospitalization. Doctors annually admit more than 4,000 patients for inpatient treatment. Several thousand surgical interventions of varying complexity are performed on the basis of the medical facility annually. The department offers the services of the certified Maximum Care Joint Replacement Surgery Center (EPZmax) and the certified Trauma Center. In addition, the department's specialists have vast experience in treating spinal and foot pathologies. The main goal of the department's doctors is to restore mobility and eliminate pain. The specialists always prefer an individual approach to each patient and his clinical case. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Johannes Beckmann.

The priority focus of the department's work is hip and knee replacement surgery. The certified Maximum Care Joint Replacement Surgery Center (EPZmax) has 20 years of successful clinical experience in its area of specialization. The department performs more than 2,600 joint replacement surgeries annually. Doctors use modern surgical techniques to treat joint diseases and implant reliable prostheses from leading world manufacturers with long service life. Particular attention should be given to the professionalism of surgeons, who select the optimal type of surgical intervention, considering a patient's individual needs and clinical characteristics.

Hip and knee replacement surgery is mostly performed using minimally invasive techniques, which contributes to the shortest possible rehabilitation period. As a rule, the duration of the intervention is no more than 1 hour. Joint replacement surgery can be performed both under general and regional anesthesia. Due to the minimal size of the incisions, the patient does not experience severe pain and can start therapeutic exercises on the day of the operation. The period of hospitalization after the operation is only 3-7 days, followed by professional rehabilitation in a specialized medical facility. The department's surgeons also successfully perform revision endoprosthetics (replacement of previously implanted prostheses) caused by the displacement of the elements of the prosthesis, its wear, infection, etc.

An integral part of the work of the department's doctors is medical care for patients with musculoskeletal injuries, including severe ones. Treatment is carried out in a specialized center, which is part of the group of centers of the German Society for Trauma Surgery. The main focus is on treating injuries in the elderly, which require a comprehensive and competent approach. The scope of the department's tasks also includes the treatment of sports injuries. Doctors often perform surgical treatment: osteosynthesis, screw fixation, sacroplasty, and operations for traumatic injuries to the abdominal cavity and chest (in collaboration with specialized surgeons). As a rule, minimally traumatic surgical treatment becomes an option of choice.

The department's doctors also have vast experience in treating spinal diseases. The most common in clinical practice are spinal stenosis, spinal disc herniation, osteochondrosis, vertebral fractures, spondylolisthesis, and spinal injuries. Initially, the department's specialists try to solve the problem with conservative methods. Still, if an operation is necessary, they use all the advanced achievements of medicine, particularly navigation systems, which allow achieving maximum accuracy during the operation without damaging the vital spinal structures.

The department's therapeutic offer includes the treatment of foot diseases. The medical facility treats hallux valgus, hallux rigidus, hammer and claw toes, ankle instability, and traumatic injuries to the bones and foot cartilage. In some clinical cases, doctors conduct only conservative therapy, but if surgery is required, then arthroscopic techniques are usually used, excluding long postoperative recovery. When developing a treatment regimen, the specialists are guided by the recommendations of the German Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (DAF).
