About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Municipal Hospital Karlsruhe offers the full range of modern diagnostics and treatment for patients with diseases and defects of the oral cavity, jaws, face, head and neck, including dental implantology. An essential focus of the department's doctors' work is on treating benign and malignant maxillofacial tumors. Operations in children are most often performed to repair cleft lips, jaws and palate. The department has state-of-the-art systems for X-ray and ultrasound diagnostics, which allow the specialists to detect the pathology accurately and plan an optimal treatment regimen. More than 1,700 inpatients and about 32,000 outpatients are treated in the department annually. The department's doctors are focused on finding the optimal treatment option, considering a patient's clinical indications and wishes. At the same time, the specialists always strive to achieve the best aesthetic result of surgical treatment. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. dent Anton Dunsche.

The department's primary task is the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the oral cavity and facial skin, and other head and neck tumors. In cooperation with the Department of Adult and Pediatric Otolaryngology and the Department of Radiation Therapy, an interdisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Center was founded on the basis of the department in 2016, which soon received certification from the German Cancer Society (DKG). The specialists of the center meet weekly for tumor boards, during which they consider each clinical case of cancer of the oral cavity, jaw, pharynx, salivary glands and other cancers, as well as develop optimal treatment regimens. The first-line therapy is usually surgical resection of the malignancy. Whenever required, plastic and reconstructive interventions are carried out to restore the shape and functions of the affected areas of the body, as well as the appearance after the treatment of tumors. Many reconstructive procedures after the treatment of oral tumors require microsurgical tissue grafting. In addition to surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is conducted.

The department's doctors are deservedly proud of their successful experience in the field of repair of cleft lip, jaw and palate in children. These deformities  are treated in a specialized center, which was founded in 2003 and today is one of the largest medical facilities of this kind in all of Germany. The surgeons in this field annually treat more than 50 newborns with cleft lip, jaw and palate, and also perform about 120 surgical interventions. Anomalies are usually detected at the stage of intrauterine development. Cleft repair surgery is performed starting from 3-6 months of life, and in the case of complex deformities, it is carried out in several stages from the age of 9 months to 1,5 years. Repair of cleft lip, jaw, and palate requires an integrated approach. This is aimed at eliminating not only an aesthetic defect, but also functional disorders, swallowing problems, breathing and sound pronunciation. The extent and type of the surgical intervention depends on the characteristics of the child and is selected on an individual basis.

The key tasks of the department's oral and maxillofacial surgeons include the repair of facial deformities, improper position of the jaws and malocclusion. The medical facility also provides conservative and surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint diseases. As a conservative treatment, special splints, physiotherapy procedures or botulinum toxin injections can be used. If these measures do not give the desired result, doctors switch to surgical treatment.

The department specializes in interventions for jaw bone tissue augmentation and implant placement. Dental implants are placed in a specialized center (Implantologicum Karlsruhe). The department has over 35 years of successful experience in the field of dental implantology. The specialists install from 300 to 800 dental implants annually, therefore they have expert knowledge and professional skills in this area. Dental implantology is complemented by dental surgery: operations to remove teeth, including wisdom teeth, root apex resection, operations to treat periodontal pathologies, abscesses, traumatic injuries, etc. To provide patients with maximum comfort, doctors use high-quality anesthetics, so that pain is not felt during treatment.

The department's range of services includes:

  • Surgical treatment of facial skin tumors: basal carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma
  • Surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint diseases
  • Surgical treatment of inflammatory processes in the maxillofacial region
