About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Otolaryngology, Allergology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen-Ruettenscheid provides the full range of medical services for patients with ENT diseases. The department also carries out diagnostics and treatment of allergic diseases. The key areas of the department's specialization are middle ear microsurgery, endonasal microscopic surgery, treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders, phonosurgery and facial plastic surgery. Pediatric otolaryngologists of the medical facility most often admit young patients who require removal of the palatine and pharyngeal tonsils. The department successfully uses both conservative and surgical treatment methods. Surgical interventions are performed in three progressive operating rooms with state-of-the-art equipment. With appropriate clinical indications, some surgical procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, without mandatory hospitalization. The department's doctors constantly improve their knowledge and practical skills, thanks to which they successfully introduce innovative treatment methods into clinical practice, which allow them to effectively restore the health of patients.
The Chief Physician of the department is Dr. med. Winfried Hohenhorst. The specialist has over 25 years of clinical experience and an excellent reputation in his field of expertise. According to the Focus magazine, Dr. Winfried Hohenhorst is recognized as one of the best doctors in Germany in the treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders, otoplasty and rhinoplasty.
In the field of otolaryngology, the department specializes in middle ear microsurgery. The most demanded interventions are paracentesis, including in children, palisade tympanoplasty, interventions for cholesteatoma, stapes surgery and surgery for pathologies of the petrous part of the temporal bone. Otolaryngologists working in the medical facility are distinguished by special competence in the field of palisade tympanoplasty for the treatment of chronic otitis media, tympanic membrane perforation, cholesteatoma, bone tissue pathological lesions and adhesions. In addition, the department successfully performs stapedoplasty for the treatment of otosclerosis. In many cases, surgeons manage to remove the pathological focus and at the same time preserve the stapes. If this is not possible, then a special prosthesis is implanted.
Another important focus of the work of otolaryngologists is on endonasal microscopic surgery. The therapeutic offer in this field includes septoplasty, sinus surgery, including balloon dilation for sinus obstruction, tear duct surgery, cerebrospinal fluid fistula removal, etc.
The department often deals with the treatment of children suffering from inflammatory processes in the palatine tonsils, particularly tonsillitis. The first-line treatment is conservative therapy, but if the inflammatory process regularly recurs, partial (tonsillotomy) or total (tonsillectomy) removal of the tonsils is required. The department performs the most modern modifications of these operations: radiofrequency tonsillotomy, coblation tonsillectomy and tonsillectomy with BiClamp®.
The medical facility performs plastic surgeries in the face and neck. The range of medical services includes rhinoplasty (surgery for nose reshaping), otoplasty (surgery for ear reshaping), reconstructive facial plastic interventions after tumor resection, as well as plastic surgery of the frenum of the tongue and lips in children.
Patients can also undergo comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of allergic reactions in the department. To determine the type of allergy, doctors carry out such tests as rhinomanometry, skin provocation testing, nasal provocation testing, and in vitro allergy testing to determine the levels of total IgE (tIgE) and specific antibodies. The treatment of allergies mostly involves the use of allergen-specific immunotherapy.
