About the city
Essen is a large city in the central part of the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the fourth largest city in this region after Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund. From the Late Middle ages on, Essen was a manufactory of weapons and evolved in the course of industrialization into one of the most important centers of the coal and steel industry in Germany. The heavy industrial past of the region is demonstrated by numerous monuments that can still be visited today, in particular the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Zollverein colliery.
