The Department of Neurosurgery at the Essen University Hospital is the center of maximum medical care and ranks among the largest neurosurgical departments of Germany. The Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Sure ensures a comprehensive medical care, which, on the one hand, is distinguished due to its high standards of qualification and training of the medical team, technical equipment and the level of organization, on the other hand, due to its tight cooperation with the departments of the University Hospital and with other medical institutions.  

The Department of Neurosurgery under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Sure covers the entire spectrum of neurosurgical diseases. This includes brain surgery to treat neoplastic and vascular diseases. The multidisciplinary treatment of vascular anomalies (aneurysms, cavernomas, angiomas). In the context of the treatment within the West German Cancer Center, the Department of Neurosurgery at the Essen University Hospital is a critical partner in the realization of comprehensive neuro-oncological treatment programs (surgery, radiation therapy, oncology) for tumors of the central nervous system. 

The treatment of acute injuries, degenerative and oncological diseases of the spine and spinal cord makes up another focus of the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Sure, where are used all common methods. 

The Department of Neurosurgery at the Essen University Hospital has 80 beds, its private Pediatric Inpatient Clinic, special Neurosurgical Department of Intensive Care with ten beds, as well as the Department of Emergency with ten beds. There are annually treated about 3,000 inpatients. Every year, there are performed about 2,400 operations in three operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The Neurosurgical Polyclinic annually provides its services to about 8 500 patients. 

The treatment focuses of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Essen University Hospital include:  

  • Surgery of benign and malignant brain tumors
  • Surgery of vascular diseases of the brain (aneurysms, angiomas, cavernomas)
  • Pediatric neurosurgery
  • Surgery in case of epileptic conditions
  • Treatment of spine and spinal cord diseases, as well as spine injuries
  • Functional neurosurgery
  • General and special analgesic therapy and decompression
  • Reconstruction and transplantation of peripheral nerves
