The Essen University Hospital is a leading medical center of Europe, where 27 departments and 24 institutes provide their top-class services. The Hospital offers high-quality medical services in such fields as oncology (The West German Cancer Center), transplantation medicine (the West German Transplant Center), as well as cardiovascular medicine. In cooperation with the leading world clinics, the Hospital has an international reputation in the field of research. Moreover, the Essen University Hospital successfully combines the latest treatments, as well as develops and implements innovative techniques through various clinical trials.
As the medical center with the state-of-the-art medical equipment, the University Hospital has made its name due to its activity in other fields of medicine. These include the Perinatal Center, the Stroke Unit at the Department of Neurology, the Headache Center, as well as the West German Proton Therapy Center in Essen.
The strong point of university medicine in Essen primarily lies in its employees, for example, the doctors of the Hospital developed a method, which helps to detect metastases in lymph nodes without any surgery in case of black skin cancer. The doctors of transplant medicine actively work at the improvement of the transplant organ condition. The future treatment concept is represented by a new director of the Department of Cardiology, Prof. Dr. Tienush Rassaf, namely, the use of sparing treatments by means of a cardiac catheter in especially severe cases of coronary heart diseases and diseases of the heart valves.
The Hospital annually treats 53,000 inpatients and has 1,300 beds. The staff accounts for over 6,000 medical employees. Due to the professionalism of the personnel, the Hospital has won an international recognition. There are annually performed 26,000 operations.
The Essen University Hospital is included into the FOCUS list of top German clinics in 2017.

About the city
Essen is a big city in the center of Ruhr Area. It is the fourth largest city of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Essen was the center of gunmen from the late Middle Ages and with the industrial development turned into an important mining industry center of Germany. The monuments of industrial culture now witness the industrial past of Essen, especially Coal Mine Zollverein, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
