These include the Perinatal Center, the Stroke Unit at the Department of Neurology, the Headache Center, as well as the West German Proton Therapy Center in Essen.

The strong point of university medicine in Essen primarily lies in its employees, for example, the doctors of the Hospital developed a method, which helps to detect metastases in lymph nodes without any surgery in case of black skin cancer. The doctors of transplant medicine actively work at the improvement of the transplant organ condition. The future treatment concept is represented by a new director of the Department of Cardiology, Prof. Dr. Tienush Rassaf, namely, the use of sparing treatments by means of a cardiac catheter in especially severe cases of coronary heart diseases and diseases of the heart valves.

The Hospital annually treats 53,000 inpatients and has 1,300 beds. The staff accounts for over 6,000 medical employees. Due to the professionalism of the personnel, the Hospital has won an international recognition. There are annually performed 26,000 operations.
