The Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation at the University Hospital Essen offers the full range of treatment for malignant and benign hematological diseases, diseases of the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. The department specializes in the treatment of acute and chronic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, malignant lymphomas, multiple myeloma and aplastic syndrome. The department is the largest specialized center for allogeneic stem cell transplantation from related and unrelated donors in Europe. The Chief Physician of the department is a leading hematologist and oncologist, Prof. Dr. med. Dietrich W. Beelen.
The Chief Physician of the department, Prof. Beelen, made a significant contribution to the development of allogeneic stem cell transplantation. In particular, he developed new, sparing methods for elderly patients in whom hematopoietic and lymphatic diseases are more common than in other age groups. In addition, the professor is also actively developing modified stem cell drugs for allogeneic transplantation in patients in the absence of tissue compatibility with the donor, as well as innovative cellular therapeutic drugs.
The department specializes in allogeneic stem cell transplantations for malignant and benign hematological systemic diseases. The specialists’ tasks also include the transplantation of the patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells after myeloablative or previous chemoradiation therapy of reduced intensity. The department has special competence in the field of allogeneic stem cell transplantation from a related donor with partial tissue compatibility or from an unrelated donor.
In addition, the department has at its disposal the specialized center for the production of stem cell drugs from the bone marrow and blood, which has at its command all the methods of collecting, preparing and storing hematopoietic stem cells. The department also operates the Transplant Coordination Center, which is responsible for optimizing the organizational processes associated with stem cell transplantation. Thus, thanks to the use of innovative medical technologies and the expertise of the medical staff, the department provides top-class medical services for stem cells transplantation.
