About the department
The Department of Pulmonology at the Helios Hospital Hildesheim offers the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services in the area of its specialization. Of particular interest to the team of the department's doctors is the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases (bronchitis and pneumonia), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary emphysema and tuberculosis. In addition, the specialists of the medical facility admit patients with benign and malignant tumors of the lungs, bronchi and pleura. These patients are treated in collaboration with thoracic surgeons. With appropriate clinical indications, neoplasms can be removed during bronchoscopy – a sparing interventional procedure. In complex cases, thoracic surgeons perform open surgery. The department's pulmonologists have long clinical experience, and therefore they successfully use the very latest drugs for the treatment of pathologies of the lungs and other respiratory organs. The course of treatment for each patient is developed strictly on an individual basis. The department is headed by Dr. med. Michael Hamm.
The department most often deals with the treatment of patients with inflammatory respiratory diseases. Pneumonia and bronchitis are among the most common of them. The course of treatment for each patient is selected individually, depending on the etiology of the pathology. This spectrum of diseases can be well treated using drug therapy. The doctors usually prescribe symptomatic therapy (medications to lower fever, treat coughs), antibiotics, and other drugs. The attending physician determines the intensity and duration of the course of treatment based on the data obtained during the diagnostic examination.
The department's medical team also provides effective treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Pathology cannot be completely cured, and therefore the task of specialists is to alleviate symptoms and prevent its progression. At the early stages of the disease, the department's doctors use only drug therapy, while more severe types of pathology, causing severe shortness of breath, require more radical therapeutic measures. In such cases, the medical team recommends an endoscopic lung volume reduction, which can eliminate shortness of breath and significantly improve lung function. Thanks to the use of modern endoscopic techniques in the department, patients have the opportunity to avoid major surgery with thoracotomy.
The department's doctors can deservedly be proud of their excellent results in the treatment of tuberculosis. The department has 20 beds for the hospitalization of patients with this infectious disease. At the early stages of therapy, the patient needs to be isolated, so hospitalization is inevitable. Once the patient's health condition is stabilized, the further treatment usually will be outpatient. The main treatment is the intake of medications prescribed to the patient based on his particular clinical case.
To diagnose and treat neoplasms in the lungs and other respiratory organs, the specialists of the department successfully use bronchoscopy. As a rule, the use of therapeutic bronchoscopy is advisable only for benign or small malignant tumors at the early stages of development. If the oncological process has reached an advanced stage, the patient needs surgical resection of the tumor. In such cases, the surgical procedure is complemented by chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or immunotherapy. Operations are performed on the basis of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, and the department's pulmonologists carry out all the necessary measures to prepare the patient for the intervention.
